Life has settled down a bit more now that my brother was finally married off last weekend. December through January was a whirlwind of wedding showers on most weekends leading up to the wondrous day. The newlyweds won't have children for at least 4 years but in the meantime they are willing and eager to babysit for us when the need arises. So far we have never left the babies with someone besides each other and neither of us know when we'll actually be willing to do so.
Over the past two days I took on what I thought would be the daunting and exhausting task of moving the girls into sleeping in their crib exclusively. My husband and I decided to do this now because I'm sleeping more deeply now that they're sleeping longer and we're concerned that a bed that has two deep sleeping people is a recipe for disaster. At first one or both of the girls would cry non stop through the whole time (40 minutes or so) until I fed them ; this only occurred about 2 or three times and now they cry for about 5 minutes and fall asleep. Their feeding times are moving back to every 3 hours or so and while they still want to be fed once in the night I still get about two solid blocks of 3 to 4 hours of sleep. My new plan is the following: Feed the girls, play with them and do tummy time until they get fussy (5 to 10 minutes) then lay them down for their nap. At first I was laying them partially on their sides up against the bumper but they would just end up next to each other, so now I just save them the effort and lay them next to each other to start with. The reason I was laying them away from each other is because they tend to hit and scratch each other in the face when they're really crying hard but since they're going to sleep pretty quickly they are no longer crying hard. I have so much free time now that I can hardly know what to do with myself:-) I miss holding them all the time but it served my needs more than theirs and thats not okay with me.
Tummy time is getting better and better. Layla is able to roll from her tummy to her back pretty quickly simply because she usually doesn't like being on her tummy. Ruby doesn't like being on her tummy either but she hasn't quite figured out how to roll onto her back but she's definitely working on it. Both babies are very alert, they make tons of eye contact, smiles, and what looks like talking with no sounds. Both girls are growing long but Ruby still tends to be on the smaller side. I hope that getting more deep sleep will improve her weight gain and tummy time. They are three months old today and in spite of being on the small side they are fitting (length wise) into 3 month sizes. I'm going in for their 2 month appointment (too many babies, not enough doctors) on wednesday where they should be getting the second hepatitis shot and a combo shot of some sort. I'm not looking forward to seeing them in pain but at least I'll figure out if they need preemptive tylenol before their appointments where shots are being administered.
In spite of being a M.O.M. (mother of multiples) I'm finding time to keep our house clean and orderly... to the exclusion of my spare room;-) My cousin is coming for a visit from Germany in March so I have about a month to get that room back in order. The biggest problem in that room is that my husband and I have moved stuff out of its proper places and I have been dumping goodwill stuff on the bed; so in actuality its not as bad as it looks. Well its that time again! I'm off to feed the girls.
